The pull to America for Norwegians was open farmland and room to grow more crops than in Norway. There was also more political freedom compared to Norway. Farmland was poor and they were only able to grow rocks and sheep. There was word of much better pay in America and the American fever spread through Norway. News of good fortune and benefits were sent back in letters. Norwegians tended to settle in states with a lot of farmland like Minnesota and Wisconsin. 55% of a Norwegian Americans live in the midwest.
